Deputies responded to a reported shoplifting incident at the Walmart store located in Stafford County.

According to authorities, store personnel contacted law enforcement after identifying a suspect believed to have concealed merchandise and exited the store without paying. Deputies made contact with the individual and began an investigation into the incident.

The total value of the merchandise was not immediately released. The case remains under review, and charges are pending.

Officials remind retailers and residents that shoplifting offenses can carry significant penalties depending on the value of the stolen goods and prior criminal history.

Jury Duty Scam Reported

In a separate case Tuesday, a Stafford resident reported receiving a phone call from someone claiming to represent the sheriff’s office. The caller allegedly told the resident they had missed jury duty and would face legal consequences unless they made an immediate payment.

Authorities confirmed the call was a scam.

The Sheriff’s Office emphasized that it does not demand payment over the phone for missed jury service, nor does it request payment via gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency.

Residents are urged to:

  • Hang up immediately if they receive such a call

  • Avoid providing personal or financial information

  • Report the incident to the Sheriff’s Office

Law enforcement officials say jury duty scams have become increasingly common and often use “spoofed” phone numbers to appear legitimate.

Anyone who believes they may have been targeted or victimized by a scam is encouraged to contact the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office directly through its official non-emergency number.
